Notes about the Model: Nelson's third complete build from a ML Boatworks is his best build, in his opinion. Pre-paint testing proved a stable and friendly-handling boat, but lacking speed. Adjustments were made to the strut depth in re-assembly after paint, so further testing will be conducted prior to the season's start to try and gain more speed.
Notes about the Real Boat: The real boat, built in 1988, was very fast, but ill-handling, especially in the turns. It was tested, and driven in competition once, by driver Larry Lauterbach in 1988; then again in 1989 by Jim Kropfeld. The innovative design was conceived and built by the great Jim Lucero. The team eventually gave up on the concept and built out the hull to be a more conventional design. It went on to win the Gold Cup with Nate Brown driving, and is currently the U-57 owned by Dave Bartush in Detroit. No word on whether the boat will run again, or if it will be stored in Bartush's collection.
Notes about 2021: Nelson's plan for the Lobster in 2021 is to have fun with it. It will be made available to experienced racers who might want to try 1/10-scale racing, and Nelson will at times run it himself as well.
