Notes about the Model: The Courtways purchased Roger Newton's Miss Budweiser at the end of the 2004 season and converted it to the LLumar Window Film for 2005. Steadily plagued by mechanical difficulties during the 2005 season, the Courtways were unable to get the boat to finish a single heat and sold the boat to Ron Daum in 2005 for his entry into the modern class. The craft then underwent extensive internal, running gear and sponson modification in the Such Crust III/Miss Pepsi shop in preparation for the 2007 season. A rejuvenated seven pound LLumar debuted at the 2007 Diamond Cup Finishing fourth overall in her first race and later winning the Apple Cup demonstration race at Lake Chelan that same year.
At the end of the 2007 season, Ron determined that the Roger Newton built plywood and fiberglass hull was no longer structurally sound and with the assistance of Howard Price and Craig Bradshaw, turned the old hull into a plug. Mold making for a new hull carbon fiber composite hull began in 2008. A new and lighter hull debuted in mid 2009. This hull went on to win the 2010 NAMBA FE National Championship in Greeley, Colo.
Notes about the Real Boat: Built as the futuristic concept two-wing T-4 Miss Budweiser. The boat was tested, with Chip Hanauer at the wheel, in Seattle. It competed in just one race (at Madison, Ind.), with Mark Evans as the driver in 2002. The boat made an impressive debut, being the fastest at a qualifying speed of 160.795 mph. Mark won every heat he finished in the boat; however, the boat was then withdrawn for further development.
The U-8 Racing Team purchased the boat, which underwent major design changes in the winter of 2003 and became a force to be reckoned with on the2003 circuit. Under the hands of the U-8 Racing Team, the LLumar Window Film Hydroplane won in Tri-Cities in 2003. The team again made extensive rebuild/design changes prior to 2004. Additional hull changes were made in preparation for the 2005 season and the team then won again in both Seattle and Nashville in 2005. Additional hull changes were made in preparation for the 2006 season, when Billy & Jane Shumacher purchased the team from Bill Wurster.
Notes about 2021/Outlook for 2022 Season: After being rebuilt in the Bradshaw Shop in 2019, The Llumar competed in the last event of the 2021 season, the Gold Cup, making it into the Ted Jones Memorial since her stablemate, Grandview on the Lake, got the nod for the Final. The 2022 campaign should prove successful for a fast, dependable and consistent competitor as the Llumar.
