Notes about the Model: The boat was built in 2009 and began competition in 2010. It is carbon fiber composite construction using the Llumar Window Films mold. The Grandview debuted at the Rose Festival Regatta in Portland, and ran at the President's Cup in 2010. The boat's overall performance has been good and it won the 1/10 scale modern class at the 2012 NAMBA FE Nationals with NAMBA VP Ted McKay driving. Ron drove the "Turbinator" to victory at the Champion Spark Plug Regatta in the Covid19 shortened 2020 season.
Notes about the Real Boat: The Cooper Motorsports’ Go 3 Racing team’s “Big Red Turbinator” is a fan favorite and a throwback. In a decade when the gas turbine engine powered hydros dominate, the U3 is the last piston-powered Unlimited-class hydro. Where the rest of the boats whistle and look suspiciously like waterborne vacuum cleaners, the roar of U-3’s turbocharged Allison aircraft engine declares its power to all in attendance in no uncertain terms. Fans love it when they can not only hear her pass but feel it too, now that’s power baby! The Cooper legacy began in 1985, when Ed Cooper Sr. and Ed Jr. bought an old-style hull from Chuck Hickling. This is the fourth boat, introduced midway through the 2002 season, has been the fastest yet and the most successful having won three races in 2003: Evansville, Ind.; San Diego; and Detroit, where Mitch Evans won power boating’s oldest and most prestigious trophy, the APBA Gold Cup. Over the years, the U-3 team has sported the name and logo of more than 13 different sponsors. In 2009 at Tri Cities and Seattle she was sponsored by the Grandview Resort on Lake Chelan Resort racing as the “Grandview on the Lake”.
Notes about 2021: This will be the last season for the now heavily "Battle Scarred" Grandview. The time has come for repair, repaint and re-livery.
